Shortcut Healthy Homemade Triscuits Hand Dipping

This recipe was originally published in 2012, but has since been updated and improved.

I always buy the plain shredded wheat cereal for one of my morning routine breakfasts. Sounds boring, I know, but I jazz it up so it doesn't resemble eating soggy cardboard. Being a blank canvas as the plain shredded wheat is, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to make some (shortcut) healthy homemade triscuits, or something similar. The bite-sized biscuits are pretty much triscuits on their own, but with a lack-luster flavor, calling to be dowsed in a garlicky, salty bath.

What makes these homemade triscuits delicious & healthy

  • unfrosted shredded wheat
  • olive oil
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • pepper

How to make these shortcut healthy homemade triscuits

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 ½ tablespoons of olive oil, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of pepper. Stir to combine.

Shortcut Healthy Homemade Triscuits Oil and Seasonings

Stir in 2 cups of unfrosted shredded wheat, and toss to coat with oil and spice mixture. Adjust seasonings as needed. If you want a crispier texture, toss coated shredded wheat onto a baking sheet, and bake in a preheated oven at 300°F / 149°C for 5-8 minutes, or until golden brown, tossing halfway through baking. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Pro Tips

  • Change up the seasonings to your liking. Some of my favorites include ground rosemary and garlic, smoked paprika and chili powder, or garlic and lime.
  • For a crispier texture, you can bake in the oven for 5-8 minutes until golden brown.
  • These are much smaller than traditional triscuits, so are better for dipping into hummus, or your favorite sauces/dips, rather than piling with toppings or cheese.

FAQs

Mine aren't coated enough. What happened?

If you feel like there isn't enough seasoning on yours, you can always increase the amount of oil or spices used. Be sure to stir completely, and to scrape the bottom of the bowl, since some of the seasoned oil can pool there.

How long do these keep for?

If stored in an airtight container, they can last for up to 1 week. Since they are so quick to make, I usually make a serving or two at a time when I want to enjoy them, since leftovers can get stale or soggy if not stored properly.

How many servings does this recipe make?

This recipe makes 4, ½ cup servings, which can easily be cut in half, or doubled depending on your needs.

Money-Saving Tips for these shortcut homemade triscuits

Buy store brand. Utilize store brands for ingredients since they tend to be a more cost effective option that doesn't sacrifice quality or flavor.
Purchase in bulk. If you use the ingredients often, buy a larger or bulk size. The cost per serving tends to be less than for smaller packages.

So funny! I was looking at your FB post for the chicken Caesar soup and then began browsing through your recipe archives. Imagine my delight when I discovered this post with a reference to your internship at UConn! Happy memories!

Oh I guess it's the actual cereal ?. Does the cereal thin out?

Hi Sky! The cereal doesn't flat out, but is rather just mixed with the seasoned butter. Hope this helps!

This isn't "HOMEMADE TRISCUITS," you're just flavoring store-bought cereal!

Shame, shame! You're robbing SEO from people who actually did post a *real recipe* for HOMEMADE TRISCUITS.

No she didn't. There's no such thing as a wholly homemade triscuit recipe, because we don't have the extruder machines to turn the dough into lttle thin strands and weave them together. This is as close as you can get at home, and I for one think it's a fantastic idea. Geez, why are some people so quick to become outraged about every little thing?

Made these per the recipe, worked fine. Knew I as going to bake, 10 minutes, 350.. Added salt, Mrs. Dash, chili powder and additional oil. Nice.

Recipe is far too salty. I’ll give it just a shake or two next time.
