Chocolate Covered Strawberries with Peanut Butter on White Plate

This recipe was originally posted in 2017, but has since been updated.

Name a more powerful couple than chocolate and peanut butter. No really, I'll wait. This might take a while.

I'll save you the time and let you know that there isn't one. I'll forever take a dozen of these strawberries over a dozen roses. Just in case you were wondering. 😉

What makes these chocolate covered strawberries delicious

  • strawberries
  • natural peanut butter (the runny kind)
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate chips)

How to make these chocolate covered strawberries with peanut butter

Wipe clean and dry 12 large strawberries, and set aside. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat ¼ cup natural peanut butter for 30 seconds, or until warmed and runny. Using a spoon, coat each strawberry in a layer of peanut butter, and transfer to a wire cooling rack. Freeze for 30 minutes, or until peanut butter has hardened.

When peanut butter has hardened, add ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 30 seconds, and stir. Repeat process until chocolate is smooth and melted.

Use a large spoon to help coat each strawberry in chocolate. Refrigerate strawberries until ready to enjoy.

Pro Tips:

  • To assist holding strawberries while coating, pierce strawberry onto a fork. Avoid holding by the stems since they are likely to break.
  • If you want your peanut butter or chocolate to be a bit runnier and glossier, you can add a teaspoon of melted coconut oil after heating through.

FAQs

Can these chocolate covered strawberries be frozen?

I don't recommend freezing these, since when they thaw, the strawberries will be really soft and watery, and the quality will be far inferior. Still tasty, not pretty.

Can they be left out on the counter?

If enjoying the same day, yes. You can leave them on the counter until ready to enjoy. Any longer, I would refrigerate for up to 2 days. After that, and the strawberries start to wilt.

How long do these strawberries last?

They are best enjoyed the same day, or within a day of making. If making ahead, I would store in the refrigerator ideally for up to a day, but can be stored up to 2 days without sacrificing the flavor or quality too much.

Are they vegan?

You can easily make these vegan by using dairy-free chocolate chips instead. Some of my favorite dairy-free options are the Trader Joe's brand and Enjoy Life. Using chocolate chips that are certified gluten-free also makes this recipe gluten-free!

Money-Saving Tips for these Peanut Butter Chocolate Dipped Strawberries:

Buy store brand. Most grocery stores carry their own brands of natural peanut butter and chocolate chips. Opt for these instead of name brands for a less expensive option.
Shop sales. A lot of times, strawberries will go on sale for Valentine's Day for this very reason. Keep an eye out for sales at your local grocery store, or make them again in the summer when strawberries are bountiful are less expensive!
