This Cheddar and Herb Savory Overnight Oats Recipe is a new way to turn oatmeal into a healthy breakfast. Made right in a jar so it's ready to go first thing in the morning!

Oh, oats. They always get the short end of the stick when it comes to their capabilities. Poor little oats.
They're so the black sheep of the grain world. Only allowed to be covered in brown sugar, cinnamon, or anything that resembles a dessert at 7AM. On the other hand, rice gets to be with beans and pudding.
Overnight oats have claimed their spot in the breakfast world, and savory oatmeal is slowly making its way there too. Savory overnight oats? Now that's a new one. And that's why I'm here.
They're creamy, sexy, cool. Herbaceous. And cheesy. Did I mention there's cheese in them? There's cheese in them. You're welcome.

Ingredients you'll need to make these
- rolled oats
- plain Greek yogurt
- low-fat milk
- shredded white cheddar cheese
- chopped fresh herbs (basil, chives, parsley, and dill are my faves)
- garlic powder
- salt
- pepper
Instructions
In a jar or container with resealable lid, combine ½ cup rolled oats, ½ cup plain Greek yogurt, ½ cup low-fat milk, ¼ cup shredded white cheddar cheese, 2 tablespoons of your favorite chopped fresh herbs, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Stir to combine, replace lid, and refrigerate overnight, or at least 4 hours.

Before enjoying, sprinkle with more shredded cheddar or chopped herbs if desired. If mixture is too thick, add extra milk a tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is achieved.
Pro Tips
- Change out the types of herbs you use for different flavor combinations.
- If you like a little added texture, mix in chopped cucumbers, peppers, or your favorite veggies.
- Make this the night before. The texture is much softer, and the flavor is more pronounced, but you can enjoy by making it a few hours ahead of time.
FAQs
How long do these overnight oats last?
You can store these oats in the refrigerator for up to two days, but I wouldn't go any longer than that. Since fresh herbs are used, they tend to bruise easily, and can alter the taste of the oats. They are best enjoyed the next day.
Can these overnight oats be heated?
Technically, yes, but I would do so gently. Since Greek yogurt is used, it can break when heated too high. Heat in the microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until just warmed through. You can also simply leave the yogurt oat, but they will not be as thick and creamy.
Money-Saving Tips for this Savory Overnight Oats Recipe:
- Buy in bulk. The bigger contains of oats, milk, and yogurt is more cost-effective than the smaller sizes. Use the leftovers for breakfast throughout the week, or make a double batch of this recipe at a time.
- Grate yourself. Pre-grated cheese is convenient, but more costly. Save a little extra by grating it yourself. It will taste fresher too.
- Use store brands. Utilizing store brands for basic items such as oats, spices, or milk can be less expensive without sacrificing flavor or quality.

I kind of love this idea! I'm not a big sweets for breakfast person, so I'll definitely have to give this a try.

I love the sounds of these! I've made savory warm oats, but never thought to make savory overnight oats! Also... I bought some of those Pumpkin O's from Trader Joe's and may or may not have made the whole box disappear in about 3 days... whoops!

You made me laugh out loud! Oats really are categorized into the brown sugar sweet breakfast mold. This looks really good!

Haven’t made it yet, but as a fellow RD, I’m surprised a the amount of salt in the recipe. Seems like the cheese has enough already. Could always add salt and pepper to taste. Just saying.
