Now that the weather is FINALLY getting warmer, my daily walks are becoming much more enjoyable. Plus, I don’t have to prepare for the arctic tundra every time I step out the door.
Walking has loads of benefits, such as improving overall health, boosting mood, and according to this recent Stanford study, boosting creativity as well. I knew there was a reason why I was the next Monet. 😉
While you should aim to get around 10,000 steps a day, or about an hour of walking each day, that doesn’t mean it has to be done all at one time. In fact, you can find easy ways to incorporate walking and exercise into your everyday activities!
Here’s 8 of my favorite ways to be more active throughout the day, and make those 10k steps easier done than said.
Most of the time, we try to do things to be more efficient, but I’m here to tell you to actually do the opposite…except for when it comes to taking in the groceries. You gotta do all that in one swoop lovey.
Taking extra time and steps can be an easy way to gt in some extra steps. Instead of getting all the things you need in one swoop, take a few trips. Take the long way around instead of the shortcut. All of those little extra steps add up!
Park Further Away
…even in -5 degree weather! Whether it’s at work, shopping, visiting a friend, parking further away is one of the ways I always get in some extra steps. Lucky for me, my job is a 10 minute walk from where I live, so I don’t have to drive to work at all!
Plus, parking further away means no cars or people are in any close vicinity to you. I’d call that an added insurance bonus if you ask me.
Drink Lots of Water
Or iced coffee. PLUS a load of water. While drinking water itself has its own benefits, an added bonus is making you walk more. Try drinking a giant bottle of water numerous times in the day plus some coffee, and not running to the bathroom 19 times each hour. And remember, to take the walk to that bathroom further away for even more steps!
Take a Lunch Break
Whether you pack your lunch or go out, you can easily work in some added steps as well. Instead of spending your entire lunch browsing Pinterest or making unsolicited purchases from Target, get outside and get some fresh air!
If you go out for lunch, choose a place in walking distance if possible, or if not, add in the parking further away tip. It’s not only a great way to add in 10, 30, or even 45 minutes of walking in, it will help you feel refreshed for the afternoon instead of crashing and ready for a snooze.
*Insider Tip: Check the weather for the day before you head out. If it’s gunna be cold, bring some mittens, boots, and a hat. Rain? Pack the rainboots, coat, and umbrella. Being prepared leaves no room for excuses! If it’s really miserable out, take a walk around the building, or do some stretches in your office or cubicle.
Being held accountable can help encourage you to keep to schedule, and stick to your walking routine. Enlist some extra help by asking a friend to go for a walk before, or after work, or a co-worker for a lunchtime stroll.
Walk Instead of Write
Sending an email to an office-mate? Before you hit send, why not be the messenger?! Deliver your message in person rather than email if possible. Plus, it can be a more direct way to get your message across than email can accomplish. That is until they come up with a sarcasm font…
Commercial Break Cardio
Taking it easy and watching your favorite evening shows can be another way to bring in some more steps or exercise. During the commercial breaks, get up and walk or run in place. Do a different activity such as planks, squats, lunges, or pushups during each commercial. You’ll be amazed at how much faster they go by when your active.
I know, I know I said to be ineffective, now I’m saying to multi-task? I promise I’m not trying to trick you. This one works for when you are already doing daily activities that are otherwise..inactive. Here’s some of the quirky ways I get in extra fitness.
-Run in place while brushing and flossing teeth.
-Contract abs while waiting at a red light.
-Do calf raises while waiting in line.
-Jog in place when waiting for coffee or tea to brew.
While you may feel a little funny doing these at first, once they become part of your routine, you’ll feel funny NOT doing them!
